There’s nothing like enjoying a spacious deck off the back or side of your home in the warm New England weather. Whether you like to grill out every night, host BBQs, watch the kids splash in the pool or just relax with a good book, a deck makes all that possible.

When contemplating building a new deck, there are three main things to consider: function, materials, and extra features such as lights, outdoor kitchens and more. Let’s go over each one in-depth.

1.    Function

Before you can even come up with square footage, placement and budget, you should think about what you will be using the deck for primarily. Will it be attached to an above ground pool? Do you like to entertain and frequently have a lot of people over? Do you like to dine outside every night with your family? Do you like to enjoy your privacy while sunning yourself or just reading in quiet? Do you have a hobby such as container gardening that you would want to use the deck for? Do you have small children who will be running around on the deck and splashing in a kiddie pool?

The answers to these questions will help you determine the next steps going forward. Size will matter if you are a frequent entertainer and throw lots of barbecues, but it won’t matter so much if you just want a private nook to enjoy a cup of coffee each morning.

2.    Material

The first material that may come to mind when thinking about a new deck is likely wood. But while this is certainly a popular traditional option, it’s not the only one to consider. You can also opt for a PVC or vinyl deck, which comes with many benefits over wood. It takes very little maintenance, you won’t get splinters, and you don’t have to paint or stain it.

Vinyl decks stand up very well to harsh weather but they could get hot under direct sun. Wood decks are a traditional choice that may cost a bit less than vinyl but that you have to care for on a regular basis.

The material you choose will depend on the intended usage, your budget and your home’s style. If you plan to add a deck that’s connected to a pool, you may want to go with vinyl decking that is 100% waterproof. If you have small kids and pets who will be using the deck a lot, vinyl is a better choice over wood because no one will get splinters.

3.    Extra Features

Consider the extra features you will want to incorporate in your deck design, as this will affect the overall layout and flow as well as budget. Extra features may include:

  • Built-in seating, benches, tables, shelves and more
  • Glass railings
  • Exterior lighting
  • Outdoor kitchens such as grills, countertops, pizza ovens, TV, sink and more
  • Architectural shade feature (pergola, etc.)
  • Sunken seating
  • Curved seating nooks
  • Levels
  • Firepits
  • Water features
  • Planting pockets
  • Outdoor rooms

There are many considerations that go into creating the perfect deck design for you and your family. We can help.
