The birds are chirping and the flowers are blooming. Spring is here, and you know what that means: getting outside to make your property more appealing with the arrival of the nice weather. Your siding may need some TLC this spring, and there are many ways to go about this. From pressure washing to checking for mold, here some ways you can spruce up your siding and surrounding areas this spring.

Wash Your Siding

After a long winter, your siding will be looking dirty and dingy. It needs a facelift, and the best way to start is by giving it a good cleaning. A wash and light scrubbing is beneficial to your siding once a year. Many people choose to rent a power washing machine to do the job themselves. However, this could be a costly endeavor and one that could cause damage if you’re not careful. You’re best off hiring a pressure washing company to do it for you in a fraction of the time it would take you to DIY it.

It’s too easy to use too much pressure and cause pitting, denting, and other damage to your siding. Vinyl siding does have molded-in colors, but some do have factory-applied finishes that can be stripped away with pressure washing. If this happens, you will void the warranty if this happens.

Use Proper Cleaning Procedures

If you have decided not to do pressure washing, you will need a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle, and a bucket of soap and warm water (quarter cup dish soap to four gallons of water). Start with one area and hose it down to get loose dirt off, then move on to the next. Start higher, and go lower from there. It’s important to point the hose downwards rather than upwards to avoid forcing water behind the siding. Scrub stubborn spots or stains gently, then rinse the area. For windows, wash and dry them by hand.

Check For Mildew and Mold

Now that the siding is clean, check for the presence of mold and mildew. If you see these spots, you can remove them using a mixture of 30% white vinegar with 70% water. Be sure to don gloves and a face mask.

Look For Cracks

Are there any cracks in your siding? Do you see areas with missing or worn caulking? It’s not uncommon for caulking to degrade over the winter, so take the opportunity to add more color-matched exterior caulk to fill those cracks and gaps.

Boost Curb Appeal

Now that the tough stuff is done, you can concentrate on curb appeal. There are a few simple upgrades you can make to your exteriors that can make a big impact. Does your entry door need a refresh? If it’s still in good shape, add a coat of paint or some new stain and varnish. Switch out the hardware for your door handle and lock. You can even add a decorative door knocker, replace your doorbell and house numbers, and add lighting to illuminate your farmer’s porch.

If your walkway needs a facelift, you can make it more inviting by making a path with stepping stones, planting flowers in window flower beds, and adding potted plants to the front steps.
