Outdoor patio scene with a table, chairs, and an umbrella providing shade.

The 4th of July is on a Thursday this year. Why not make it a long weekend filled with fun, friends, celebrations, and cookouts? However, finding a space to entertain, relax, and grill out with your neighbors could be challenging if you don’t have a deck – or at least one that’s big enough to fit everyone. Answer that challenge by renovating your deck

Patriotic Deck Decorations

The first thing you’ll need to do is add festive decorations for your party.

  • Tableware: Add touches of red, white, and blue to your outdoor space with white napkins, red plates, and blue glasses. Complete the look by spreading confetti across the table.
  • Lighting: Hang lights on your deck or patio to set the mood for festivity with a beautiful atmosphere after the sun goes down. If you’re crafty, try your hand at these patriotic mason jar lanterns
  • Railings: Decks make the perfect location to hang flag bunting and display your love of country.
  • Door: If you have a patio door leading into your home, make a patriotic wreath from red, white and blue bandanas on a foam wreath form.
  • Accents: Purchase some throw pillows in a red, white, and blue theme to add to your seating areas.

Food

What 4th of July cookout would be complete without themed food?

  • American flag fruit and cheese tray: Line a tray with foil and start building your flag: a square dish of blueberries and mini marshmallows in the corner, followed by alternating red and white stripes or strawberries, cheese cubes, and raspberries.
  • Fruit skewers: Cut watermelon into thick star shapes and spear blueberries onto a skewer. Stick the skewer into the watermelon and you have a refreshing and light dessert for your guests.
  • Patriotic Pasta Salad: Impress your guests with this refreshing and colorful pasta salad. Cook some tri-colored pasta, and add cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, and black olives. Toss with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper, and fresh basil.
  • Patriotic punch: The kids will love this cool punch made with just four ingredients: Blue Hawaiian punch, Sprite, and red, white and blue sorbet. You can also make a red one with Red Hawaiian punch!

Deck Games

If your new deck is quite large, you can play various games on it to bring everyone together. Some ideas include:

  • Patio chess or checkers
  • Giant Jenga
  • Water balloon baseball
  • Yard Yahtzee
  • Bean bag toss
  • Spikeball
  • Ladder toss
  • Inflatable bowling
  • Giant yard pong
