Advantages of Architectural Shingles Over 3-Tab Shingles

In residential roofing, the two most common shingles are 3-tab shingles and architectural or dimensional shingles. Many older homes feature traditional 3-tab shingles, but architectural shingles have been rising in popularity in the last several years.

3-tab shingles are so named because they comprise three individual tabs that are a 12” wide, available in 20-year, 25-year, or 30-year warranties. They are asphalt-based products that shed water to the shingle below. The most basic and least expensive choice, this entry-level roof shingle is rated for up to 70mph wind uplift, compared with 130mph for architectural.

Architectural shingles, also known as dimensional shingles, come with a minimum 30-year manufacturer warranty or even a lifetime warranty. These are two asphalt shingle strips laminated together to form one shingle. Originally, they were designed to simulate the look of real wood shake roofs. The tabs on these roofing shingles come in varying widths, with slightly different shades of color for a more dimensional appearance.

Advantages of Architectural Shingles

You may be wondering: why should I choose architectural shingles over traditional 3-tab? There are many reasons, including:

  • More attractive
  • Better curb appeal
  • Longer manufacturer warranty
  • Protects against black algae stains
  • Higher wind resistance (up to 130 mph)
  • Stronger resistance to hail impacts
  • Better fire resistance

Installation tends to be easier because there is no need for tab slots like you would find in standard 3-tab roofing. They also happen to be sturdier and heavier than 3-tab yet don’t require don’t extra support to be built under them. In fact, they actually lighten the load for your roof.

Homeowners who want a high-end roofing system that looks like wood yet performs like asphalt are best going off with architectural shingles. Whether you go with laminated or composition, architectural shingles will give you a gorgeous, long-lasting three-dimensional roof that mimics the look of natural wood or slate. Also, the asphalt in architectural shingles is stronger and more refined than 3-tab, and due to the thickness and composition, you get a higher wind resistance.

Architectural shingles are a superior product over older 3-tab shingles, so may cost a little more. But you get a lot more. Durability, appearance, longevity and beauty: these are all advantages of architectural shingles.
